The Story of Guruprasad Udupi Restaurant
Guruprasad Udupi Restaurant was founded in 1985 by Late Shri V. Ramachandra Rao (also known as V. Ramananda Holla), a visionary entrepreneur whose journey embodied resilience, integrity, and hard work.
Originally from Kundapur, a small town in Karnataka, he arrived in Delhi over four decades ago with very limited means but immense practical wisdom, determination, and a dream to build something meaningful. Before establishing the restaurant, he worked tirelessly across several cities including Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Shimoga, and Hyderabad, gaining invaluable life experience and understanding the essence of hospitality.
At a time when authentic South Indian cuisine was not easily available in Karol Bagh, he took a courageous step towards introducing traditional flavours and heartfelt hospitality to Delhi. What began as a humble initiative gradually transformed, brick by brick, into one of the city’s beloved South Indian dining destinations.
Built on uncompromising values of quality, hygiene, discipline, and consistency, Guruprasad Udupi Restaurant soon became known not only for its food but also for its warmth and welcoming atmosphere. Over the years, the restaurant had the privilege of serving people from all walks of life, including respected personalities and public figures such as Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj.
Beyond business, Shri V. Ramachandra Rao believed deeply in kindness, community, and empowerment. He quietly extended support to friends, family, employees, and countless others without seeking recognition. Through his dedication and leadership, the restaurant became a source of livelihood for nearly 100 families.
He also believed strongly in family values and women’s empowerment, placing immense trust in his wife and daughter to continue carrying forward his vision and legacy.
Today, Guruprasad Udupi Restaurant stands not only as a restaurant, but as a reflection of his life’s work, values, and enduring spirit, a legacy built with honesty, courage, and heart.

The Founder's Story
Shri V. Ramachandra Rao

In 1985, when Delhi had almost no authentic South Indian options, Shri V. Ramachandra Rao made a quiet but determined journey from Udupi, Karnataka to the capital. He rented a small space in Munirka and started cooking the food he grew up with.
He didn’t compromise on authenticity. He brought cooks directly from Udupi. He sourced the right ingredients. He ground his chutneys fresh and fermented his batter overnight — every single day. People noticed. Then they came back. And brought their families.
What started as a small South Indian-only kitchen grew into a landmark. Today, under the stewardship of his son Aakash Rao, the restaurant spans three kitchens and a beloved rooftop terrace. The Thanjavur paintings on the walls, the vintage simplicity of the space — all of it is a conscious tribute to the founder’s original vision.
